ANGER
We talk freely about such sins as murder, adultery, drugs even homosexuality and it is easy to point fingers at those who are involved in these sins. We should point out that these things are sin and those who are engaged in these things are living immoral lives. But these things are easy to talk about because these are things that we are not involved in. We may have known Christians who have been involved in one of these or some other seemingly gross immorality but the odds are the number of cases are not very many when we think of the number of brethren we know. We need to remember that our Lord made no difference in sin with one exception and that is to blaspheme the Holy Spirit. Truly "the wages of sin is death. "Rom. 6:23. That includes all sin, not just the "biggies," but also even those little things that we all do. One such sin is anger. It is something that we have all done and we know what it can do in our lives and the lives of those around us. Most who are aware of their anger and what the scriptures say about it will quote Eph. 4;26. "Be angry, and yet do not sin;" and then they say" see it says I can be angry; that anger in and of itself is not always sin," and this is true. But we need not ignore the rest of the Bible and think that we can justify our anger by these words only, when else where we are told "for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God." James 1:20. When we begin to look at the history of the anger of men in the Bible and see what it has done, we begin to understand what James is telling us. It was anger that caused Cain to murder his brother Able, Gen. 4;5-6. It seems that David's anger played a part in the death of 70,000 men of Israel, 2 Sam. 24:1-17. Again it would seem that anger played a part in the death of Naboth in 1 Kings 21:1-16. Truly the anger of men "does not achieve the righteousness of God".   There is an old saying that goes something like "you are known by the company you keep. "This is something we can, without a doubt apply to anger. In Eph. 4:31 it is spoken of in the same breath with such things as "bitterness", "wrath", "clamor", "slander", and "malice". We are told to "put" these things "away from" us. In Col. 3:8 we are told to "put" several things aside and they are "anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth." In Gal. 5:19-21 "outbursts of anger"'^ listed as one of the "deeds of the flesh" and it is in verse 21 that Paul tells us "those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. "It is interesting that Solomon understood all the problems of anger when he said "do not associate with a man given to anger; Or go with a hot-tempered man, Lest you learn his ways, And find a snare for yourself. "Proverbs 22:24-25. Though we can "be angry and sin not" we begin to understand the difficulty in this. The next question we might ask is how can I over come anger in my life? This, without a doubt, is a good question. First I would suggest that we finish looking at Eph. 4:26-27. "do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity." How many times have we gone to bed angry and got out of the bed the next morning feeling the same way we did when we went to bed. All we have done is give the devil an opportunity to tempt us in our lives. We need to practice the putting away or the putting aside of anger as we are told in Eph. 4:31 and Col. 3:8 above. Next we need to practice the "fruit of the Spirit" found in Gal 6:22-23. which includes the following: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control". When we practice things they become second nature to us. It will not be long before we are so used to doing what is right that one day we will wake up and realize that we are not angry any more. I will close with these words of Solomon, "Scorners set a city aflame, But wise men turn away anger. "Prov 29:8. Be wise and turn away anger.
"THE BEST IS YET TO COME"
There was a young Christian woman who was diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as she was getting her things "in order," she contacted her preacher and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. Everything was in order and the preacher was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her.

"There's one more thing," she said excitedly. "What's that?" came the Pastor's reply.

"This is very important," the young woman continued. "I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand." The preacher stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say. That surprises you, doesn't it?" the young woman asked.

"Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request," said the preacher.

The young woman explained. "My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement. In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, 'Keep your fork.' It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming...like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance! So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder "What's with the fork?" Then I want you to tell them: "Keep your fork, the best is yet to come."

The preacher's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman goodbye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. She had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge. She KNEW that something better was coming.

At the funeral people were walking by the young woman's casket and they saw the cloak she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the preacher heard the question, "What's with the fork?" And over and over he smiled. During his message, the preacher told the people of the conversation he had with the young woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either.

So the next time you reach down for your fork let it remind you, ever so gently, that if you are an obedient child of God, the best is yet to come.

Christian Recreation

This article was presented at a Bible class one Sunday and I thought it might be of interest to others.

Only the uninformed or the religious fanatic would say that a Christian should not have a recreational life. All well-balanced, properly developed individuals must be engaged in recreation. A Christian is not different. It is not of a question of should we have recreation in our life, but what recreation is permissible. Just what can a Christian do and what must a Christian avoid? What recreation is right, and what recreation is wrong? These are perplexing questions that confront every Christian as he or she endeavors to select appropriate recreational activities.

The Bible does not answer these questions in specific terms of “thou shall not” or “thus says the Lord”, but the Bible does address them in principles. These principles should help us make the right choices as we consider the many recreational opportunities that confronting us every day. The following questions serve as a guide to exercise our minds in testing the acceptability of the different recreational activities.

  1. Does this activity destroy y identity as a Christian by causing me to be regarded as the world? 2 Cor 6:14; Rom 12:1,2
    1. Do I Go along with the crowd?
    2. Do my friends know that there are some things I will not do?

  1. Is the activity questionable in your own mind and therefore as offense to my conscience? Rom 14:22, 23; Jas 4:17
    1. If I don’t know if an activity is right or wrong, what should you do?

  1. Does this activity weaken my influence on unbelievers or could it become a stumbling block to my brethren? 1 Cor 8:7-13; 1 Cor 10:23, 24
    1. Will my being engaged in this activity make other Christians stronger or weaker?
    2. How serious is it if my influence is not all that great? Matt 18:6-7

  1. Is this activity harmful to my body? 1 Cor 6:9, 19, 20
    1. Why is it wrong for us to abuse our body?
    2. Could this also include activities and recreation involving extreme risks?

  1. Does this activity conflict with my duty as a Christian? Matt 6:33; 2 Tim 2:4, Heb 10:25
    1. What if my recreational activity causes me to miss assembling with the church?
    2. If every member of the church missed services for recreational activities, would the church be affected?

  1. Does this activity appeal to indecency or cultivate a fleshly appetite? Cor 3:3-5; Tit 2:11-13; Phil 4:8
    1. Would being engaged in this recreation be an undesirable habit?
    2. Does this recreation make my thoughts impure?
    3. Does this recreation interfere with my spiritual growth?

  1. Does this activity place me in bad company or at a disadvantage? 1 Cor 15:33; 1 Thes 5:21,22; 2 Cor 6:14-18
    1. Will my being engaged in this recreation make it harder for me to live as a Christian?

Conclusion: Some general questions we should consider concerning our recreation:

  1. 1.Would I want God to know that I’m engaged in this activity? (and He does).
  2. Could I invite Jesus to participate in this activity with me?
  3. Would I be willing to ask the preacher, or elders and their wives to join me in this activity?
  4. Would I want my parents, spouse, children or other family members to know that I participate in this activity

Scriptures Used

2 Cor 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? NKJV

Rom 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. NKJV

Return to 1

Rom 14:22-23 Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin. NKJV

James 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. NKJV

Return to 2

1 Cor 8:7-13 However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some, with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse.  9 But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things offered to idols? 11 And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? 12 But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. NKJV

1 Cor 10:23-24 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. 24 Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-being. NKJV

Matt 18:6-7 "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. 7 Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!  NKJV

Return to 3

1 Cor 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,

1 Cor 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.  NKJV

Return to 4

Matt 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. NKJV

2 Tim 2:4-5 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.
NKJV

Heb 10:25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.  NKJV

Return to 5

Col 3:3-5 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.  5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. NKJV

Titus 2:11-13 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, NKJV

Phil 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy -- meditate on these things.
NKJV

Return to 6

1 Cor 15:33 Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits." NKJV

1 Thess 5:21-22 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.  NKJV

2 Cor 6:14-18 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people."  17 Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you."  18'I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the LORD Almighty."  NKJV

Are You Worshipping God In Spirit And In Truth?
This Bible study course is written with the hope of helping us to worship God in the way that is acceptable to the Lord so we can go to heaven when this life is over. Jesus says in John 4:24, "God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth." The reason I have used such a large number of scriptures throughout this course is to point to the truth of what God has said on how He is to be worshipped, and not what I say. For us to worship God in spirit and in truth we must make sure we obey all of His commandments as given by Him in the Bible on how He is to be worshipped. If we fail to follow God’s instructions it becomes sin, we will be lost and be punished along with Satan in eternal torment.

How To Do Personal Evangelism

You are to be commended for your desire to do personal evangelism.  We read in Proverbs 11:30, "He who wins souls is wise."  Where someone spends eternity can very well depend on what we do or don't do.  There are those desiring to hear the gospel but they don't know what it is and they will not know unless we teach them.

The purpose of this web site is to help you to teach the lost so they can be saved and go to Heaven.  Included in this web site is a 3 lesson Bible study you can download, print, and use to teach others the gospel of Christ.  Permission is granted for you to print the three lessons and anything else on this site and make as many copies as you need, but please do not sell them.   If you have any comment or questions, please E-mail me at ron@netbiblestudy.net   Ron Boatwright
